Morning Hike

Hiking the trails at McNee Ranch State Park

Itching to get outside, Kelly and I took Lilly out for 2-hour hike this morning, our destination being McNee Ranch State Park.

Located roughly fifteen minutes north of our base in HMB, about half of the park’s trails hug the famous Highway-1, offering breathtaking views of the coastline.  High above the road, the sights from the ocean-view trails today were hit-and-miss, as was the weather … the result of a lazy Sunday morning marine layer  which hadn’t yet burned itself away.

Despite the lack of consistent sun, the walk proved to be a great start to our day.

Hellbent On Change

Spot #8

Spot #8

With little fanfare, yesterday we arrived back to HMB and quickly got ourselves settled.  They say home is where the heart is, which for us seems to be somewhere else.  Because we yearn to be continually elsewhere, I particularly hate this phase of our travels – its symbolism affirming our ‘rootedness’ as being someplace other than where we really want to be … on the road.

Yes, our home is mobile and we do enjoy freedom we never experienced while owning a house, but our current situation is really a tease of what life might be like if we were on the road full-time.  If only.

Having spent 16 of the past 21 days traveling, we have no fixed plans for our next trip.  We will go somewhere over the July-4 break, but nothing is solidified at this point.  For now, our next trip seems like forever away.

During the drive yesterday, Kelly and I discussed (yet again) our desires to make a change.  A big change.

We just need to think through some important decisions.

We both have good jobs which for now tie us to the Bay Area.   We also need to be thoughtful about disrupting our long-term retirement (financial) plans.  Any decision to walk away must be done so responsibly and only after having been thought through completely.

Today is Kelly’s birthday and for a few months we are once again the same age.  It’s silly, but I enjoy sharing the same number with her.  As a birthday gift to Kelly, we are committed to having full-time travel plans fully baked and ready to execute by this date next year.  Our promise to the other is this:  Project Launch will be ready for primetime.

I want to believe such a gift will be a wonderful present to my wife – the woman I love.

Until then, we have a lot of thinking to do.

Good Times Ending

Yesterday Kelly and I accompanied Brian and Leigh on a bit of reconnaissance as they scouted potential boondocking sites near Ashland.  These guys are pros when it comes to sniffing-out free camp sites, that is those locations offering a blend of beauty, no costs, and quality WiFi.  Kelly and I find ourselves increasingly attracted to these type locations, so we were keen to join them.

We visited a few additional locations before moving onto the Grizzly Peak Trail for a nice tree-lined hike and more good conversation.

After the hike we had plans for dinner – sadly the week was ending, but not before one final meal and more swapping of stories.

Enjoying our last supper

Our week with Brian and Leigh has been really great.  Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and earlier today, Kelly and I parted ways with our traveling buddies – we are headed south to Half Moon Bay and they continue onward in their crawl towards Canada.

We cannot wait to meet-up again.

The Famous Aluminariums

After work today, Kelly and I had drinks with Brian and Leigh at their place Airstream, before moseying into town for pizza and salad at the super informal Martolli’s – one of our favorite places to eat in Ashland.

Over the course of the evening many stories were shared … all which are securely situated in the vault.

Brian and Leigh are good people and it was a stevie wonderful evening.
